Adolescent Health and Youth Development Program

Adolescent Health & Youth Development provides educational and instructional support for youth related activities. The purpose of the Adolescent Health and Youth Development (AHYD) program is to enhance the skills and improve the health status of Georgia’s adolescents ages 10-19 through opportunities and programs developed in collaboration with families, communities, schools and other public and private organizations throughout Georgia. AHYD-sponsored programs reinforce positive attitudes, healthy behaviors and activities, and reduce risk-taking behaviors, such as violence, substance abuse, poor school performance and sexual activity.

AHYD utilizes a variety of age appropriate curricula designed to prevent teen pregnancy by helping youth understand the importance of abstaining from sexual activity and equipping them with skills to do so.

Two evidence based curriculums are used to teach teens about the consequences of sex. AHYD programs are free of charge. Workshops are conducted by a trained adult facilitator and can be implemented in a variety of settings.

One curriculum, called Making a Difference, is abstinence based.

Topics covered in abstinence education curriculum include:

  • Self-esteem
  • Communication
  • Sexuality
  • Dating violence
  • Abstinence
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Goal-setting
  • Decision-Making

Another curriculum, called Making Proud Choices, is a comprehensive approach aimed at encouraging safe sex with the use of contraception.

Topics covered in the comprehensive sex education curriculum include:

  • Goal-Setting
  • Decision-Making
  • Teen Pregnancy
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • HIV
  • Condom Education
  • Negotiation and Refusal Skills

AHYD is also trained to provide the Family Life and Sexual Health (FLASH) curriculum, a comprehensive science-based sexuality education curriculum designed to prevent unintended pregnancies, STDs and sexual violence. The curriculum includes a strong family involvement component, creating opportunities for families to talk with their children about important sexual health topics. It is inclusive and highly interactive, including examples and activities that will resonate with youth from a variety of geographical regions, racial identities, and sexual orientations.

Youth Advisory Board

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is the Adolescent Health & Youth Development (AHYD) teen leadership group. The YAB helps AHYD and the Coastal Health District by providing an adolescent perspective on programs and activities that are offered in the community and at the health departments.
